Filmmaker Anita Allison Starts Production on Film About Cuffe & Wainer
The CUFFE PROJECT is an ambitious film initiative that includes a short film, a television series, and a film trilogy. Its mission is to bring to life the remarkable stories of Paul Cuffe and Michael Wainer, two historical figures whose contributions have been largely overlooked.
Why Now?
Through this project, the portrayal of Black and Indigenous communities breaks away from typical narratives, showcasing them as thriving and impactful—a perspective rarely seen on-screen. Viewers will discover that these protagonists were born free and played pivotal roles in shaping American history.
Concept from the script
The short film, CUFFE: TAXED, goes into production in Summer 2025. The film seeks to challenge and transform the audience’s perceptions of Black and Indigenous men, particularly during the Revolutionary Era. It tells the story of the heroic effort to save Nantucket’s starving community by delivering crucial food supplies during the Revolutionary War.
Directors statement
The CUFFE PROJECT broadens the narrative of American history by spotlighting the rich legacy of Black and Indigenous communities—stories that are vital, inspiring, and long overdue to be told.
